Why Union City's October Keeps Coming Back to One Block of 15th Street

October 15, 2026

Union City's website lists six city-hosted community events for October 2026. Four of them happen on one block of 15th Street, between Bergenline Avenue and New York Avenue, or right at its corner. That block has the William V. Musto Cultural Center at 420 15th Street, Colin Powell School at the New York Avenue corner, and the stretch of pavement that has hosted the city's Halloween festival since at least 2024.

The other two events go to school venues uptown. The pattern still holds. When City Hall wants people in one place on a Saturday night, it usually picks 15th Street.

The October Calendar, Sorted by Address

The two Saturday events on October 10 have already happened. The October 15, 17, 22 and 31 dates are still ahead. Five of the six list free admission on the city's website. The four on the 15th Street block are all on Saturdays, and the two off the block are on Thursday evenings and run with the Union City Board of Education.

A Library Building With a Second Job

The Musto Cultural Center didn't start out as a cultural center. The Jersey Journal reported in June 2011 that it was dedicated that year inside the former 15th Street Library at 420 15th Street. The same report described the plan at the time: three museums, an art gallery and a concert space, with the Union City History Museum on the third floor. Art receptions every two months and senior programs were listed as planned offerings. That's what was announced fifteen years ago. Before you go expecting the museum floors, check with the city to confirm what's open to walk-in visitors today.

The 2026 calendar shows what the building is actually used for now. Between September 25 and October 17, the city booked it for three very different kinds of evening:

  • September 25: A Night of K-Meditation at 6 p.m., with free admission and free refreshments.
  • October 10: Union City Street Ping Pong at 7 p.m. The city supplied the paddles and balls, so people could just show up and play.
  • October 17: "The Silence of Forms," a free solo exhibit by artist Mario Sarmiento, opening at 7 p.m.

Meditation one week, table tennis two weeks later, a gallery opening the next Saturday. The building was a library, and it now works more like a community room. City Hall books it for almost any free evening it wants to host. The Sarmiento exhibit is the next one up, at 7 p.m. this Saturday.

Halloween Has Claimed the Same Pavement Three Years Running

The block's biggest night of the year comes at the end of the month. The city's notices put the Children's Halloween Festival on 15th Street between Bergenline and New York avenues on October 31 in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The festival has stayed on the date and the block even as the day of the week moved. October 31 fell on a Thursday in 2024 and a Friday in 2025. This year it's a Saturday, which means the first weekend run of the three years on record.

The 2026 announcement lists free rides, candy and children's activities from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with free admission. The city also added safety guidance for families:

"Parents and caregivers should make sure costumes fit properly, do not obstruct children's vision, and include reflective materials when possible. Children should carry a flashlight or other light source, and younger children should be accompanied by an adult or responsible older child."

The festival runs into the evening, so a flashlight in the candy bag covers the walk home.

Where the Block Meets Bergenline

The block works as a gathering spot partly because of where it ends. The 15th Street block opens onto Bergenline Avenue, which NJ.com's Peter Genovese called New Jersey's greatest food street. His feature describes a 4.4-mile run through four towns with nearly 300 restaurants, cafes, bakeries, delis and markets representing 28 nationalities. The piece first ran in 2024 and was republished in September 2025.

Two spots sit about a block from the festival footprint, across from each other in the 1600 block of Bergenline:

  1. Argentina Bakery, 1611 Bergenline Avenue. It has been open since 1991. NJ.com included it in its November 2024 list of the state's best bakeries and pointed to the guava-and-cheese pastry, the tres leches cake and the custard tarts. Current hours are posted on the bakery's own site.
  2. Roast & C.R.E.A.M., 1620 Bergenline Avenue. This café was in Hoboken Girl's December 2025 Hudson County food guide. Its ordering page lists a 7 a.m. opening time and says online ordering is currently unavailable, so call ahead or walk in.

Both write-ups date from 2024 and 2025. If you're planning around a specific item, like a tres leches for a Halloween party, check with the shop first.

For a longer sit-down meal before or after an event, El Artesano is farther north at 4101 Bergenline Avenue, the address Hoboken Girl's guide lists. The family-owned Cuban restaurant has served the area since 1974, and its menu includes ropa vieja, lechón asado, picadillo and homemade desserts. NJ.com put its empanadas in its July 2026 statewide empanada roundup. The fillings include guava and cheese, crabmeat, and ham and cheese.

The Two October Dates That Go Uptown

The October 15 soccer tournament is at the Midtown Athletic Complex at Jose Marti STEM Academy, 1800 Summit Avenue. The city is co-hosting it with the Union City Board of Education, the Union City Soccer Club and Union City UNIFIED TOPSoccer, and admission is free. The same address also houses the Union City Library, where the city's free adult Painting on Canvas Workshop has met on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. since September 9. Registration is required.

The October 22 event, a second "Let's Tie One More Ribbon for Breast Cancer" gathering, is at Esther Salas Academy, 516 36th Street, at 6:30 p.m. Both are weeknight events with a school partner and a school venue. On weekends and for open-to-everyone events, the city keeps going back to 15th Street.

November Is Already on the Books

The city has posted its November 2026 events page, but the event details aren't readable as text yet. As of today, the December page shows no event information. Both pages should fill in over the coming weeks. The notices so far don't say whether the next events will be at Musto or on the 15th Street block.
